Your observation is so spot-on that the (mostly lilly-white) Academy only awards Black actors for stereotypical roles — especially in “Black” films that somehow manage to center whiteness (looking at you, Green Book). However, I gave up on the Academy behaving any differently and stopped watching the Oscars years ago. My feeling is, when it comes to recognizing the excellence of Black films centering Black people in all our richness and nuance, we need to stop looking toward the Oscars for artistic validation because, when it comes to us, the Oscars are not — and have never been — relevant.
