You are absolutely correct! I read a lot of high fantasy was I was young and during my college years. It was when I was in college that I started realizing: "Where are the Black folk in SFF?" Your observation is so spot on. GRRM ushered in "grimdark" fantasy that borrows from Tolkien, but adds cussing and explicit sex.
