We are going to have to agree to disagree, Simon. In your piece you wrote:

. Oppenheimer wasn’t the film to explore those topics, and any attempt to crowbar in tokenistic references would have been patronising and diluted the power of the story Nolan was trying to tell. Nolan is a film director, not a history teacher. He isn’t obliged to include every single detail and to tell every single perspective, in one film.

Yes, Nolan is a film director and not a history teacher. That said, when a filmmaker produces a film about a real person and actual historic events, it is irresponsible to ignore significant details about their life and actions that impacted the lives of others - otherwise the film should be described as pure fiction based on a historical figure. I don't believe that's how Oppenheimer is marketed. Fact: the Native American and Hispano communities living near the initial bomb test were devastated by the fallout. Impacts most likely still felt to this day. Including those facts in the film wouldn't have been "tokenistic references." It would have been the truth about the real human costs of the development of the atomic bomb. This is not an insignificant detail. Regarding racism in Hollywood, my points in the article were for fellow members of the Black community. You may have your opinions about what constitutes racism, but Black people, we live it. Our lived experiences take precedence over the opinions of others who will never deal with anti-Black racism - and how pervasive it is in society. That said, I thank you for taking time to read my article. We disagree, but Oppenheimer is a hit film that was awarded the highest accolade a motion picture can receive. But for me and the Black community, we have valid grievances against the Academy. We also don't have to watch yet another film centering a white male genius - tortured or not.
