No, you didn’t make a mistake. $150,000 for a film budgeted at 15 MILLION based on YOUR script?! That should be illegal. You are courageous for refusing to be exploited while maintaining your creative integrity. My head nodded throughout my reading of your account because of my agreement that screenwriters are the most exploited professionals in Hollywood after assistants. Without great scripts Hollywood has nothing, yet it has always irked me that directors and actors get HUGE financial paydays — often in the millions — plus fame and acclaim. In contrast, talented screenwriters toil away in relative obscurity earning far less than they deserve relative to their contributions. You’re right, this is yet another type of exploitation that has been acceptable in Hollywood, and your speaking out and refusing to be taken advantage of is the beginning of changing that. My sincere hope is your script gets filmed. I know it sounds like a movie I would pay to see. I also hope you continue to write despite your negative experiences because we desperately need more voices like yours onscreen. I wish you all the best.
