I agree - a more robust public transit system in the United States would provides enormous benefits. However, there are some major hurdles to overcome: First, there is a long-standing stigma many hold that public transit, such as buses and subway systems, are mainly services used by the poor. This is especially true in the Southern states and mid-western parts of the country. It's silly and elitist, but true regardless, because demonizing the poor is a national pastime. Second, people also see cars as an extension of their identity instead of what they are, means of transportation. Blame car manufacturers and marketing for this. Owning a car has become synonymous with freedom, status, and prestige - and people won't let go of this identification easily - even though the environmental threats of continuing driving cars in mass is significant. Public perceptions about public transit must change - and I hope they do soon.
