The wee hours of the morning are a treasured time for me.

As a child, my maternal grandmother lived with us. She would rise every day at 4 AM, pray, make her first cup of coffee of the day, and begin preparing breakfast for the rest of the family.

Mornings would start with me waking up to the heavenly smell of her buttermilk biscuits baking while sausage, bacon, and scrambled eggs were frying in her beloved cast-iron skillet.

I miss those days and I miss her.

Once, I asked her, “Granny, why do you get up so early every day?”

She replied, “Well, baby, I grew up on a farm. Rising early in the morning, thanking God for another day, and beginning our chores were our way of life. Besides, I love the early mornings. The day is fresh and full of possibilities.”

Her words stuck with me, and being an introvert, my appreciation for them grew as I did.

As an adult, my early bird tendencies bring me a lot of joy.

Between the hours of 4 AM and 7 AM, on most days (even on the weekends and holidays!) you will often find me:

  • meditating
  • exercising
