Buying the latest and greatest electronic devices is basically a new iteration of "Keeping Up With The Joneses" - another way to display status. For the typical consumer, most computers and smartphones have more than enough power to last for years. I have a 2015 15-inch Macbook Pro. I was tempted to upgrade to the M1 Macbook Air, but for both my personal and professional needs, my current Macbook is doing just fine. Unless you are in a profession that demands increasing computing power - like video editing or professional photography, buying a new computer and smartphone every upgrade is not very practical, or beneficial to the environment. Thank you for articulating this so well!
